Dear people on the internet who once took a logic class:

Just because you learned names for poor argument strategies, such as “appeal to authority” and “straw man”, and you remember them, that doesn’t mean that you actually understand them. 

Nor does it mean that because you can place one of those names on a line of argument, that it’s automatically invalid.  There’s a fine line between a “slippery slope” argument and logical cause-and-effect. 

And no, you can’t make up your own names and pretend that they’re correct either.
