I should preface this by saying that I’ve never owned a console until it was nearly at the end of its generation. I got an NES exactly two years after they stopped making games for it. I didn’t buy a Gamecube until they released the Zelda retrospective disc with some of the old games, about a year and a half before the Wii came out. Thus, I typically buy games used because it’s the only way to get them.
So when I read this, I got a bit twitchy. Not even so much because I personally buy used games, but that I can’t fathom where they are coming from. When someone buys a used game, someone else has already bought it new. THQ already made money on it. If they’re upset that they can’t make the same money on it again…… fuck ’em.
Furthermore, it’s almost a moot point. The industry format is already turning to digital downloads. I suspect the next-gen systems will be almost entirely free of hard copies (except Nintendo, because that’s what they do).
I just really don’t get what the purpose of intentionally fucking over the secondhand market is.
